Physical activity disclaimer
Updated 2 October 2025
Scope
This disclaimer covers any lessons or materials that involve physical education, school sport or physical activity provided via this website operated by the Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW).
Assumption of risk
While activities are planned with safety in mind, participation is at your own risk. IFOW is not liable for any loss, injury or damage of any kind arising from participation. Please see our Terms and Conditions for further details.
Delivery by qualified practitioners
Lessons are intended to be led by appropriately qualified practitioners. Where delivery occurs in a school setting, the relevant teacher(s) and school leader(s) must keep risk assessments up to date and actively monitor the effectiveness of controls.
- Remove personal effects.
- Tie back long hair.
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the activity.
Refer to the Association for Physical Education’s guidance “Safe Practice: in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity”. Failure to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessment and controls may breach health and safety law.
Outside of school supervision
If activities are undertaken other than under a teacher’s supervision, parents and carers are responsible for ensuring safe conditions, following safety advice provided in lessons, supervising where required and seeking medical guidance in advance if the participant has a health condition that may limit physical activity.
Participant acknowledgements
- Activities are undertaken at the participant’s own risk.
- Physical exercise can be strenuous and carries a risk of injury; each participant is responsible for assessing their capability.
- Participants will not exceed their limits and will choose an appropriate difficulty for their skill, ability and physical condition.
